The Maldives could disappear by the end of the century if the world does not tackle climate change quickly and incoherently.

This was stated by Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Aminat Shaun, according to CNBC
According to her, if the environmental damage continues at the current rate, by 2100 the country “will not happen.”
“We will not survive … The climate is really changing, and we are the most vulnerable country in the world. There is no land higher for us. There is only us, only our islands and the sea,” the politician said.
According to the World Economic Forum, by 2050, climate change will affect 80% of the world’s people, and scientists estimate that by 2100 the sea level could rise by 1.1 meters.
If the predictions come true, the South Asian archipelago risks facing some of the most adverse consequences. Today, 80% of the country’s 1,190 islands are just a meter above sea level. 90% of the islands, according to the minister, reported flooding. Coastal erosion reaches 97%.
“Our income, our nutrition, and our survival depend on how we solve these problems today. The future of our country, the future of our people, the future of our culture – it all depends on our actions today,” Shauna said.
According to her, the Maldives is implementing measures to protect coastal areas and seeks to become a leader in efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, in particular, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Last year, the government promised to reduce harmful emissions by 26% compared to 1990 levels and completely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. However, international cooperation is needed to achieve these goals.
“We need everyone in the world to address climate change on a personal and political level by governments. We need ambitious goals to help not only the Maldives but all small island nations,” she said.
