“Currently, the ecological condition of the Black Sea is unsatisfactory, the negative dynamics are exacerbated by climate change. The Black Sea is the most isolated sea in the world, and almost everything that falls into its waters remains in its ecosystem.
The total catchment area of the Black Sea river basins is 1.5 million km. The waters of the four largest rivers enter the Black Sea: the Danube, the Dniester, the Dnieper and the Southern Bug. Agricultural activity in this catchment area is the cause of the removal of pesticides, pesticides, petroleum products, surplus fertilizers and organic matter with river runoff into the sea.
The main sources of pollution, sea pollution include river runoff, discharge of return and wastewater from point coastal sources, diffuse pollution coming from maritime vehicles, “said the All-Ukrainian Ecological League.
They stressed that the most critical indicators of the state of the marine environment and dangerous factors of negative impact are eutrophication and its consequences.
“… significant pollution of marine ecosystems with toxic and carcinogenic substances, microbiological pollution, reduction of biological diversity, reduction of marine living resources, including fish stocks, reduced quality and availability of recreational resources, threats to public health,” the League said.
At the same time, the All-Ukrainian Ecological League believes that the commissioning of the Deepwater Release project should improve the quality of sea water in the Black Sea and solve the problem of overflow of the Hadjibey estuary.
The purpose of the Deepwater Release is to stop the discharge of untreated wastewater into the Black Sea, as well as the release of treated wastewater to a guaranteed safe distance from the shore at a depth of 16 m. – 400,000 cubic meters. The lack of a sewage disposal system increases the risk of a dam breaking in the Hadjibey estuary, which could result in flooding of the surrounding areas and cause a man-made disaster.
The commissioning of the project should improve the quality of sea water in the Black Sea and solve the problem of overflow of the Hadjibey estuary, ”the All-Ukrainian Ecological League stressed.
