Ukraine, Ukraine gate- March 27, 2022- In Budapest, 300 pairs of worn shoes were laid out on the banks of the Danube in memory of at least 300 people killed in an airstrike on the Drama Theater in Mariupol.
This was announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba on Facebook.
“Today in Budapest there was an action in memory of the victims in Mariupol, where Russia staged a barbarism that Europe has not known since the Second World War. The action in Budapest took place near the “Shoes on the Danube” memorial, which honors the memory of Hungarian Jews ruthlessly exterminated by the Nazis. Before the murder, the latter forced people to take off their shoes, “he said.
Kuleba added that 300 pairs of worn shoes in memory of at least 300 women, children and the elderly killed by a Russian bomber appeared next to the bronze sculpture today.
The Minister stressed that the action was inspired by the speech of President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called to realize that the atrocities of the Russians in Mariupol now, in the 21st century, are no different from the atrocities of the Nazis in Budapest in 1944-1945.
“This call has echoed in the hearts of not only Ukrainians, but also many Europeans and Hungarians,” he said.
Kuleba also called on the partners to prove “never again” by concrete deeds: “Impose even more severe sanctions, give Ukraine all the necessary weapons, drive Russia into even deeper isolation, support Ukraine in everything until our victory.”
In addition, the Minister thanked the Ukrainian Association “Unity”, the embassy, the Ukrainian community and the organizers for this action.
On March 25, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called on Hungary to decide which country it supports in this war.
On the same day, the Mariupol City Council announced that 300 civilians had been killed at the Drama Theater, which was bombed by enemy Russian aircraft on March 16.
