Kurt Campbell, coordinator of the White House in the Indo-Pacific region, and Laura Rosenberger, a senior Chinese National Security Council official, met with representatives of the United Kingdom in Taiwan in early March, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Three people familiar with the escalation said the United States wanted to step up cooperation with European allies, such as Britain, to raise awareness that the administration considers Beijing’s increasingly strong stance on Taiwan, which it considers part of China.
The Taiwan dialogue is intended to complement the more advanced discussions that the United States is having with Japan and Australia, as Beijing has stepped up military action around Taiwan. Over the past year, China has sent more and more fighters, bombers and other combat patrol aircraft to the island.
Admiral John Aquilino, head of the US Indo-Pacific Command, told the Financial Times last month during a trip to Australia that the war in Ukraine “declared the risks that China faces to Taiwan.”
Diplomats in the three countries of the Indo-Pacific region said that the expanded US-British initiative had brought American participation in Taiwan to an unprecedented level.

“We need to prevent threats in the Indo-Pacific region by working with allies like Japan and Australia to protect the Pacific. We need to ensure that democracies like Taiwan can defend themselves,” she said.
