Today, the European Court of Human Rights elected a new president, Siofra O’Leary from Ireland. She will be the first female president of the ECtHR. This is stated on the institution’s official website .
Details
O’Leary has been a judge of the ECtHR since July 2, 2015 and Vice-President of the ECtHR since January 2 this year.
She will succeed Robert Spano of Iceland as president and will take office on November 1.
O’Leary was educated at University College Dublin and the European University Institute in Florence.
Prior to her appointment to the Court, she held a number of academic positions, and was a Referendum and President at the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The European Court of Human Rights was established in Strasbourg in 1959 to deal with possible violations of the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights.
On May 20, Ireland assumed the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and will hold this position until November of this year.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has appointed Margarita Sokorenko as the Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights.
