According to the Indian news agency Economic Times, in September, Armenia ordered about $ 245 million worth of heavy weapons from India .
Details
The order includes missiles, rockets and ammunition amid escalating tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Citing sources, the Economic Times reported that the order includes the first-ever export of local Pinaka multi-barreled missile launchers, which are also used by the Indian army, as well as anti-tank missiles and a number of ammunition.
India in 2020 delivered four Swathi radars to Armenia at the height of the Karabakh war with Azerbaijan.
Karabakh War
Relations between the former Soviet republics have been strained since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, an area internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven surrounding areas – Lachin, Kelbajar, Agdam, Fizuli, Jebrail, Kubadla and Zang.
Large-scale clashes broke out in the Karabakh region on September 27, 2020, when the Armenian army attacked civilians and Azerbaijani forces, violating several humanitarian ceasefire agreements.
Azerbaijan then launched a counteroffensive operation, later called the Iron Fist, which led to a 44-day conflict that ended in the liberation of Azerbaijani lands from occupation by Armenian troops.
