“My call is addressed primarily to the President of the Russian Federation. I plead with him to end this spiral of violence and death, including for the sake of his own people. On the other hand, I am saddened by the suffering of the Ukrainian people as a result of the aggression they endured. I appeal with an equally confident call to the President of Ukraine to be open to serious proposals for peace. I strongly urge all active international actors and political leaders to do everything possible to put an end to the war, not allowing themselves to be drawn into a dangerous escalation, as well as to support and promote the initiative for dialogue,” the Pope said.
He also added concern about Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories, which is contrary to international law and increases the risk of nuclear escalation.
Recall
Pope Francis, during a recent trip to Kazakhstan, said that it was a mistake to call the conflict in Ukraine a Russian-Ukrainian war, since in fact it is a “world war”.”
