The European Union has agreed on a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, the Czech presidency of the EU Council said on Wednesday, October 5 .

“Ambassadors (eu countries – ed.) reached a political agreement on new sanctions against Russia — a strong EU response to Putin’s illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories. A written procedure will follow, the sanctions come into force from the time of publication in the official journal,” the Czech chairmanship said in a statement on Twitter.

RFE/RL journalist Ricard Jozwiak added that “EU ambassadors have so far approved all the details of the sanctions package against Russia and a so-called written procedure has been launched, which will end tomorrow at 10 o’clock. So, a publication in the official journal of the EU tomorrow.”
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reacted to the adoption of the sanctions package.
“I welcome today’s agreement of member states on the eighth package of sanctions. We acted quickly and decisively. We will never accept Putin’s fictitious referendums and any annexation of Ukraine. We are determined to continue to make the Kremlin pay,” she tweeted.
