“The war in Ukraine and conflicts in other countries have caused so much bloodshed and violence that it has dramatically affected the whole world. But we can’t agree that our focus isn’t on climate change. Of course, we must work together to support the peace effort and then overcome enormous suffering. But climate change occurs within different time limits and on other scales. This is a defining problem of our time,” he said.
Details
According to the UN Secretary-General, the problem of climate change is a “major challenge” of the 21st century, and pushing it aside would be “unacceptable, outrageous and destructive”. He noted that most conflicts are related to growing climate challenges. In particular, Guterres noted, the war in Ukraine “showed the deep risks of our dependence on fossil fuels.”
He stressed that the climate crisis cannot be justified by retreat or “green camouflage”.
“If this is noticed, there are grounds for greater urgency, more decisive action and responsibility,” Guterres concluded.
Recall
A new UN report says that each of the last eight years, if forecasts for 2022 remain in place, have been hotter than any year before 2015.
The organization said that the more warming, the stronger the consequences will be. Thus, the poor countries least responsible for climate change, but the most vulnerable to its consequences, have suffered from the climate crisis.
