On December 24, 2022, the flagship of the Ukrainian research fleet – the icebreaker “Noosphere” left Cape Town (South Africa) for the Antarctic. This is his second Antarctic season under the blue and yellow flag.
The captain of the ship, like last time, is Pavel Panasyuk.
Details
“The current expedition is a joint Ukrainian-Polish and is financed mainly by the Polish Antarctic Program (which is very helpful for us in the context of a budget reduced due to a full-scale war). So first, Noosphere will go to the Polish Antarctic station Arztowski, which is located on King George Island,” the statement said.
Next, the icebreaker will deliver the cargo, and what is very important, the Ukrainian team of technical specialists to our Vernadsky station.
“These specialists, despite all the difficulties, must complete the started modernization of the station’s infrastructure. This season, there are plans to replace the heating system, equip a new boat storage area, work on grounding the diesel and main station building, as well as a number of other urgent work necessary for the successful wintering of the 28th UAE,” the Center added.
Ahead of the ship is a long road across the Atlantic and Southern oceans. The icebreaker is expected to reach Vernadsky by the end of January next year.
By the way
“Noosphere” goes to Antarctica with a large trident on board (measuring 1.25 m by 1.05 m). Two small State Coats of Arms of Ukraine were installed in the autumn of this year under the command of Captain Oleksandr Hryshko during the repair and preparation of the vessel for the Antarctic voyage. Our symbols took a prominent place of honor – on the raised pipes on the right and left sides of the vessel.
“The world must see our indestructibility and confidence in Victory everywhere, even in the midst of icebergs and eternal snow. Everything will be Ukraine!”, the scientific center added.
Recall
From the end of January to the end of May 2022, the first Antarctic season of Noosphere took place. Our flagship successfully provided rotation of winterers at the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadsky”, the change of polar explorers at the Polish station “Arztovsky” and the conduct of unique research on the study of the Southern Ocean.
