Visionary leadership
Such a leader propels people to a common vision. The bottom line is not how to get to the goal, but to make the team understand where you want to go. According to the authors, this is the best way when you need to find a new direction of movement.
The advantage of this style is that it allows employees to search for new ways to solve problems and experiment. Failures are permitted and acceptable. Accordingly, employees can feel comfortable trying new approaches.
The authors believe this pattern has the most impact on corporate culture. Many companies do not have a mission or at least a well-defined version. This results in employees feeling unmotivated. It is very important that the answer is, “Why” do something.
Training leadership
This leadership style, as its name suggests, is steering leadership. Things like a one-on-one meeting with employees are typical for this type of leader.
The only problem with this style of leadership is that depending on the way it is performed, this behavior can be perceived as micro-management and has unpleasant consequences.
It is worth taking the time to discuss these issues so that no employee will consider that you are involved in micromanaging. Remind them that, after all, this is their decision, and you are just a router and advice when you need it.
According to the authors, this style greatly influences the company’s culture. One of the biggest mistakes leaders make in this style is focusing on improving the weaknesses of their employees. If you want to get better results from your team, you need to focus on their strengths.
Closely related leader
This pattern aims to establish communication in the company and to create a more harmonious workplace where everyone knows and collaborates well with each other. If there are disagreements in the team and some employees do not like it, this style of leadership can help remedy the situation.
The authors believe that this pattern has a positive effect on corporate culture.
Democratic leadership
The essence of the democratic style of leadership is the collective pursuit of the result. This leadership style is best used when you as a leader are not 100% sure of which direction to move in, and you want to use the “wisdom of the crowd” to make a decision.
For important or urgent decisions, this may not be the best approach. In such cases, team leaders are expected to make decisions for the entire team and to trust them. The authors believe that this pattern has a positive effect on corporate culture.
The leader sets the pace
The authors consider this style to be a “negative” leadership style.
Such a leader sets the pace for his team. He sets goals and expects the team to achieve those goals no matter what. He requests a lot from his team usually, such a leader practically does not give any detailed instructions and expects the team to find out.
The authors believe that this style affects culture, but, on the contrary, in a negative way. This style of leadership often leads to employee overload and burnout. These leaders get results in the short term, but in the long term, this style causes great damage to team morale.
Team leadership
This leadership is associated with a feeling of fear.
Leaders are presented as cold and uninspired. In most cases, this pattern has a very negative impact on corporate culture. Meanwhile, the authors note that this method is still the most common driving technique, although it is less effective.
There are quite a few advantages to this style, but at the same time, there are many disadvantages.
The only way this pattern can be effective, Goleman notes, is in a state of crisis if an urgent reversal is needed. But in most cases, this pattern does not work.
