Disneyland, an amusement park in Anaheim, California, features Disney characters, horse rides, and shows based on the creations of Walt Disney and the Disney Company. Although the central building, Sleeping Beauty Castle, is modeled after Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, it is an unmistakable symbol of American popular culture. Disneyland is the only Disney theme park designed and built under the direction of Walt Disney.

In the early 1940s, Disney began planning for themed experiences to complement its Burbank movie studio: a backstage tour that includes a train ride through the “village” group and an amusement park that caters to its employees and children.
By the 1950s, he had founded WED Enterprises, a corporate entity created to plan and build a theme park on studio grounds. In the end, he chose a plot of land in countryside Anaheim, near Los Angeles, for the park instead, largely as a result of the hostility of Burbank city officials toward the studio project. This much larger plot allowed Disney to reimagine his garden into the public “gigantic movie set” that would become Disneyland.
Funding the endeavor proved difficult, but Disney managed to secure a large portion of the funding from the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC); ABC, in return, received the rights to produce a weekly Disney TV show and a share of the park’s profits.
Disney Construction began to act toward nostalgic feelings and imagination is evident in park design and construction. The areas that opened in Disneyland were the main street of the USA, evoking an American city in the Midwest at the turn of the 20th century and modeled after Marceline, Missouri in Disney.
Fantasyland, based in part on stories from Disney’s Animation features; Adventureland, an area with a jungle character; Frontierland, featuring Mark Twain, the river. And Tomorrowland, an optimistic vision for the future.
Later additions were New Orleans Square, based on the southern US city of New Orleans; Bear Country later renamed Critter Country, which features a country bear campground and mountain splash rides; Mickey’s Toontown, a colorful, cartoonish-style world.
This short-lived vacation area existed from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.
The Anaheim Hotel also has a sister park, Disney’s California Adventure, which opened in a year in the early 2000s; A separate shopping, dining, and entertainment area called the Downtown Disney District; And three hotels.
Disneyland has become a magnet for tourists from all over the world. By the turn of the 21st century, more than 14 million people visited the park annually.
