History of the holiday
History draws people to the origins of the holiday: it is believed that St. Titus lived in the world in the VIII-IX centuries. He was an ordinary man. Rejecting all the joys of carnal desires, Titus devoted his life entirely to the service of the Lord. He was later canonized. At the beginning of his church career, he was a simple novice, later he received monastic vows.
His whole life was connected with a single place – the Studio Monastery. Titus was surprisingly obedient and merciful. For this, according to legend, he discovered the gift of God – Miracles. At the end of his life, he has ordained a priest, who imposed on him the duties of a wise leader of the monastery. In those days, the faith and the church itself were persecuted and questioned by the rulers. Titus defended his faith with dignity and steadfastness and the faith of all the people who turned to him for help.
The saint lived to old age. Having lived a modest life, he received vivid impressions of the case, which became the meaning of his life.
Traditions and rites
It has long been believed that crows are a bad sign on this day. Therefore, if at least one crow cries over the house, fertility and prosperity will leave the house for a year. Hosts do not be lazy every year on the day of Titus the Wonderworker to drive away blackbirds from their roof.
And also people closely watched the behavior of the April river. It was believed that if the river dropped the ice shackles too quickly, the year would be difficult in all spheres of life. But if the river overflowed and overflowed from the banks, it promised a strong hayfield and a riot of colors, as well as summer heat and busy weekdays.
On this day it was necessary to make an account of your provisions. Previously, the audit of grain left after the winter was carried out. Proverbs that echo the holiday of ancient times have survived to the present day. For example: “Don’t feed yourself, but don’t insult the field with the grain” or “Sell the cow, but sow the field with the grain”.
Signs
Most often, the signs of this holiday affect the field of agriculture and rural life:
There is a belief that if the rivers spilled a little in the fields in the spring, then this year’s haymaking will be extremely unfortunate and will bring the little harvest. And there is also a sign that if there are no ice floes in the river or they melt directly in the water in a short period of time, the harvest will be poor.
But birds, on the contrary, a good sign, if they are not crows, of course!
The cry of the quail means a good harvest. Excited pigeons will bring nature closer to the rapid heat.
If you notice cranes flying south during sowing, the year will be very unlucky. Magpies are a sure sign of clear weather, if the birds have flown high, the day will be sunny.
