Billionaire Elon Musk has offered inventors $100 million in prize money to develop ways to combat global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or ocean.

In January, Musk announced his intention to offer $100 million in prizes and announced the rules of the competition on April 22. It will last four years until Earth Day 2025.
Carbon projects have already received support from Silicon Valley startups, government officials concerned about slow emission reductions, and sources of emissions, including oil companies seeking to offset their climate impacts.
The technology is not yet commercially viable. Carbon removal can cost more than $ 300 per metric tonne in a world that emits greenhouse gases each year, the equivalent of about 50 billion tons of carbon dioxide.
“We need to consider both cost and scalability. Will, there be enough carbon to make it matter, and can we afford it as a civilization? These are two important things,” Musk said.
Carbon capture and storage have aroused increasing interest as global warming has melted glaciers, intensified tropical storms, and led to “flooding on a sunny day” in an increasing number of coastal areas. As countries work to reduce emissions, scientists say carbon removal technology will also be crucial to achieving zero emissions by 2050.
US President Joe Biden has said the United States intends to reduce carbon emissions by at least half by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by the middle of the century. The US president has announced a climate summit for dozens of world leaders. The summit will take place over two days and will be attended by about 40 countries and organizations.
Leading leaders include Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
