History of the holiday
The name Lysogon has a certain meaning and is associated with an animal such as a fox. On this day, the animals leave the inhabited houses – burrows and go in search of new housing. At some point in their lives, foxes become inattentive, they do not see or listen to anything around them, so it is a great target for hunting enthusiasts.
Saint Martin was born in ancient Italy. This was in early 620. The boy grew up exemplary and obedient, respected his elders, and helped the elderly. Apparently, this helped reveal his potential as a priest. From childhood, Martin loved the Holy Church, believed in God, and patiently sought solace in prayer. When he was young, he became a priest of the monastery where he studied. Later, after the departure of Pope Fedor I, Martin took his place.
The saint preached and taught the faith to all who wished. People flocked to the church, listened to prayers, taught psalms. Martin’s sermons were incredibly profound and filled people’s souls with joy. At that time there was no single faith in Christianity in Italy; there were still those who believed in paganism, worshiped many gods, and offered human sacrifices on the altar of their faith. Martin was deeply outraged by this barbaric attitude towards human lives. After all, the Lord taught goodness and mercy, faith, in his opinion, should bring joy.
The Italian authorities did not support the martyr in his bans on paganism and planned to get rid of him. One night the ruler of Italy ordered his commander to arrest Martin. He was scared. So he sent an ordinary soldier to the army, whose goal was to kill Pope Martin. The same day the soldier went blind.
The saint was arrested and sent to Naxos Island, where he was imprisoned. The years spent in agony left a significant mark on the Pope’s health. From hard labor, he returned a dirty and frail old man in rags. When he was brought to the ruler of Italy, he only laughed at his appearance and gave fun to the crowd.
Pope Martin did not live long after that, he died on the island of Chersonese, where he was serving a life sentence.
Traditions and rites
On this day, every respectable hunter goes fox. The fact is that these animals arrange a new home: they come from the holes inhabited during the winter, in search of a new home. While they choose a place and dig a hole, arranging a new house, the foxes become short-sighted. Even if the hunter comes very close, the beast is unlikely to pay attention to him. The poor become beautiful prey at such moments.
This holiday is also good for courtship. Many couples, having decided to get married, meet their parents on this day. A solemn ceremony is held, at which the groom once again makes an offer to the bride.
The crow on this day is considered a bird of fortune. To please a feathered friend, you need to cook a plate of oatmeal and take it outside in a shiny bowl. The bird is sure to notice the shine and fly up to eat treats. It is believed that if you attract a crow on St. Martin’s Day, then all year the bird will protect the house and owners from failure.
