How to understand when it’s time to just resign, and it needs to be done, we’ll talk later.
Work – why do you need it?
Work remains the main opportunity for an adult to provide for his own life and the life of his family and to maintain a certain social level.
Work divides us into social classes, work determines the degree of material security, social prestige, and real usefulness, work, after all, takes up most of life. And not just an adult. Indirectly, we have been working since childhood: we gain a knowledge base at school, learn skills in college, and take specialties in universities. And having invested so significantly, you have the right to expect that the work will meet our basic needs:
Development
A person must develop, learn and master something new, advance in his career.
Security
For the most part, it comes down to stability – the comfort of the workplace and a decent level of wages;
Social significance
For a huge number of people, work is a place where they show themselves as a social unit: they try to look dignified and communicate, establish not only professional but also friendly ties.
And all the situations in which it will be best to resign are somehow related to the violation of these three basic needs.

Your salary is being withheld
Two months without payment is an important reason to say goodbye to such a company. Even if you see great opportunities for development, you are satisfied with the team and the leader, but you are no longer paid steadily, there is little chance of earning money. Not everyone can cope with the crisis, and there are many cases where employees have shown understanding, continued to work enthusiastically but ended up with nothing. This is a waste of time and unfulfilled obligations to the other side of your life – family, children, life.
You are bored, uninterested, or ashamed of what you do
When a person does not like his job, is not interested in it, he will not be able to do it well. In this case, the dismissal will be a gift for the company and for you. Because it will give you a chance to find a really interesting and important direction, where you can be realized and fill your life with colors – because it’s very sad when a person all his life just “sits” from call to call on boring, uninteresting work, burying their true talents and desire.
The other side of the same question is when the company’s values don’t match yours, and the work turns into a war with yourself. Areas where many halftones and half-truths and adherence to moral criteria is very difficult, many can simply break. And if you feel the risk of losing yourself as a person, it is better to be free.
You have outgrown your position, but the system itself does not let you go
Another growth problem is when there is nowhere to grow. You have reached the ceiling of this system, and it begins to literally squeeze you. As if the Universe itself says: it’s time to go, you need further, higher. Maybe create your own business or radically change direction. But this feeling that development stops, creativity closes, and you just start to be present in the workplace, signals that it is worth thinking about some other work.
If you are not valued, disrespected, and openly used
The unhealthy moral climate in the team “screams” about this. Constant quarrels, intrigues, conflicts, and discomfort, which should be spent energy, time, and life instead of professional development and creativity, lead to emotional burnout. Coming to work as if to war – maybe someone likes it, but you will not last long. If managers do nothing for psychological comfort so that people can strive for their goals, work well and develop, then they simply do not respect their employees. Where man is not a value but is used as a pawn in another’s game, there is no development, no security, no social significance. You have to leave such a company.
If you have unresolved conflicts with the head
When the leader is a tyrant, there is no point in fighting him. It is easier to find another. But not everything is clear here. If you understand that any person with whom you are currently in conflict is a teacher who is called to identify your weaknesses, then the conflict can be overcome with significant preferences: to establish a relationship and develop some missing qualities. But this requires a competent study with a specialist. It is possible to paint independently on points: what is positive for me in this situation, what my features provoke aggressive behavior of the opponent, and how I can correct the behavior to receive profit. In general, in order to have a good professional relationship with a manager, you need to understand what he needs from you, as a specialist. What is the problem? Maybe you can’t handle the responsibilities or you don’t behave as required by the company’s rules?
All doubts are in favor of security
Go or stay – if this is the choice you are facing now, just compare all the pros and cons. Write 10 positions in the columns “advantages” and “disadvantages”. If the pros outweigh and adhere to our three basic needs: development, security, and social significance, it is better to stay and reconsider something. If you went into a deep deficit – get fired. But only after you find another job. It is necessary to look for it in parallel, because, having abandoned everything and left without means of subsistence, you will be more inclined to seize the first-best workplace which can appear worse than left.
