“After much deliberation and hard work regarding our relationship, we decided to annul the marriage,” they said in a joint statement.
“Over the past 27 years, we have raised three wonderful children and established a foundation that works all over the world to ensure a healthy and productive life for all people.”
According to Gates, married life between them had become impossible and could not continue.
Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates left the company’s board of directors last year and has since focused mainly on philanthropy.
He still owns about 1.3% of Microsoft with a net worth of roughly $ 130 billion, and he ranks fourth on the list of the richest people in the world.
According to financial data, the Gates Foundation’s assets are close to $ 50 billion, and over the past 20 years, it is the largest private charitable institution in the world. Every year during 2018 and 2019, the fund allocates approximately $ 5 billion in grants.
In recent months, the fund provided $ 1.75 billion to develop and distribute tests, treatments, and vaccines against COVID-19.
In particular, a grant of $ 4.9 million was awarded to the German company BioNTech, which together with Pfizer created the first vaccine against the Coronavirus.
In the divorce petition, Bill and Melinda said they would continue to work together as part of a charitable mission.
