Mass protests took place in Colombia after a night of riots in the capital, as street violence continued after more than a week of fierce anti-government demonstrations.
23 protesters and one police officer were killed in riots that began a general strike over unpopular tax reform but escalated into an outbreak of anger over pandemic poverty and human rights abuses.
On Wednesday, tens of thousands marched through the capital Bogota, despite the threat of police violence and heavy rain. Several hundred people gathered in the historic Bolivar Square in front of the capital and staged a demonstration lined up by several agitators. By evening, law enforcement officers cleared the area of people with tear gas and a light signal.
Demonstrations against tax reform are taking place throughout Colombia. Riots were recorded in Bogota, Cali, Medellin, and other cities. On Friday, the government agreed to amend the reform, but protests continued.
After nearly a week of protests across Colombia against President Ivan Duque and a government-proposed tax revision law, the head of state ordered the repeal of tax reform to developing a new proposal based on political “consensus.”
It is also reported that Colombian Finance Minister Alberto Carrasquilla has resigned. President Duque agreed to the expiration of Carrascilla’s term.
According to The City Paper Bogota, 19 people were killed and more than 800 were injured in protests in Colombia. More than 80 people who took part in the protests in Colombia are listed as missing.
