The project will be carried out by the engineering company Milan Ingegneria, which won the competition announced by the Italian government.
The floor of the Colosseum was removed by archaeologists in the 19th century when they discovered an underground network of tunnels under which gladiators and animals were kept before entering the arena.
Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said the floor restoration would allow visitors to see the grandeur of the Colosseum from a new perspective and return to the original image of the arena.
The reconstruction project envisages the creation of a fully removable floor structure made of super-strong water-repellent modified wood – Akoya. The floor area, built of hundreds of wooden rails that can rotate, will be 3,000 square meters. meters.
The Minister of Culture is also confident that the new floor will allow the Colosseum to become a platform for large-scale cultural events. The G20 cultural summit is planned for July this year.
An interesting detail of the project: rainwater, which will be collected on the floor, will be used to supply the toilets of the most visited monument in Rome.
The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. Gladiator fights and other public spectacles took place in front of at least 50,000 people.
The arena remains one of the most famous attractions in Italy. In 2019, a year before the pandemic, the monument was visited by about 7.6 million people.
