At least 25 people have been killed in a shootout between suspected drug traffickers and police in Rio de Janeiro.

Drug dealers in a poor area of Jacarezinho were trying to escape through rooftops when police arrived. The firefight forced residents to take refuge in their homes. Among the victims was one police officer, and the rest were among the drug gang.
Among the dead were the leaders of a gang of drug traffickers. According to them, at least 10 suspects were arrested.
It was the deadliest single police operation in 16 years for Rio, which has suffered from drug-related violence in poor areas for decades.
A 2005 raid in the Baixada Fluminense area of the brutal northern suburbs of Rio killed 29 people.
“This is one of the largest death toll in a police operation in Rio, which in 2007 exceeded 19 in the slums of the Complex do Alemanne, except that we did not lose any of our then,” police chief Ronaldo Oliveira told the agency.
