Why is it so important to take care of jewelry
Cleaning will not only extend the service life but also return the accessories to their former luster. Even if the jewelry is made of first-class stones and materials, it does not guarantee protection from external conditions. Bacteria, dead skin cells, dirt, and dust accumulate on rings, bracelets, earrings, and other items every day. Over time, they can cover the jewelry with a matte layer, clog the mechanisms, turn accessories into a source of disease.
The main signs that the jewelry needs care – is a change in appearance and skin irritation: despite the fact that at first, the jewelry did not cause allergies. Otherwise, the timing of cleaning varies.
When to wash accessories
The frequency depends on how often you wear this or that piece of jewelry. It also depends on the location of the accessory. For example, necklaces are less likely to collide with outer surfaces, unlike rings, so they should be cleaned every 2-4 weeks.
You need to spend more time on earrings: they should be washed once a week. They often get fat from the hair, tools such as hair sprays. Rings that you wear constantly should be cleaned daily, but at the same time prefer gentle means. Those that you periodically put in the box, it is best to wash every time you remove them for a long time.
The general rule for all jewelry: remove them when applying makeup, take a shower and use various skincare products. This will help keep the accessories clean.
How to clean jewelry
Usually, people prefer to clean them with soda, hydrogen peroxide, or even GOI paste. However, such methods can only spoil the accessories and precious stones. Hard compositions eventually remove the glossy layer and thin the product, making it cheaper.
The best way to wash jewelry is to leave them in a soap solution for a while. Take a small bowl, pour warm water into it. Add a little dishwashing liquid or household soap and mix until smooth.
Then put the jewelry there and leave for a minute, then gently rub them with your fingers: so you remove dirt and dust, but do not spoil the accessories. Keep in mind that this method is not suitable for natural pearls. They should be cleaned only with a cloth dampened with water, then dried thoroughly.
By the way, a ring for everyday wear, such as a wedding ring, you can tidy up while washing or cleaning your hands. Remove it, treat with soap and then rinse under running water.
Sometimes a lighter will be needed during cleaning, for example when hair is stuck in the links of the chain. Quickly run the fire over the metal, and after making sure that the debris has burned and the decoration has cooled, immerse it in soapy water. So you get rid of soot.
Most often, people resort to hard cleaning because the soft does not remove all the flaws. In this case, the ring, earrings, or chain should be given to the jeweler, and not try to clean such things with the help of professional warehouses – there is a risk of spoiling the jewelry. If you wash the accessories in a timely manner in a soap solution, you will not have to experiment with products that are dangerous to your favorite jewelry.
In addition, the condition of jewelry is affected by how you store them. It’s not just about fine parameters like humidity – the size of the box is much more important.
How to store jewelry
Adapt the capsule wardrobe rule and use it when sorting accessories. If you have a lot of kits, have a box under each box to store the ones you wear most often. Carefully sort the rest of the jewelry in a special box.
Store necklaces vertically: they also have special hangers. If it is not possible to buy it, pull each chain into a cocktail tube, and then leave the neck jewelry on small hooks. So they do not get confused.
Every 6 months, tidy up the box, especially the one that stores accessories that you don’t wear every day. Sometimes even the tidiest person can hastily put jewelry out of place and create a mess. Under such conditions, jewelry can deteriorate quickly.
