Paul Van Doren, one of the founders of the Vans clothing and footwear company, has died at the age of 90. The company reported his death on Instagram.

In 1966, Paul Van Doren, his brother James and their business partner Gordon Lee opened their first Vans store in California called the Van Doren Rubber Company. The abbreviated name Vans appeared in the 1970s. In 1988, the founders sold the company. Vans is now part of the VF Corporation.
The company specializes in the production of shoes without laces with a light canvas upper and a thick rubber sole.
There are currently more than 300 Vans stores worldwide. A few weeks before his death, Van Doren published an autobiography, “Authenticity: Memoirs of the Founder of Vans.”
