He won 55.2% of the vote after running in the second round with Bailey when none of them managed to get a majority in the first round of voting.
Khan became the first Muslim mayor of the EU capital when he was first elected to the post in 2016.
Speaking at City Hall, he promised to “work hard to help build a better and brighter future for London”. Sean Berry of the Green Party came in third, and Louise Porritt of the Liberal Democrats came in fourth.
Khan was considered the favorite throughout the campaign, and some polls predicted that he would win more than half of the votes in the first round.
Khan’s closest rival was Bailey, who received 44.8% of the vote in the first and second rounds and increased the Conservative vote by 1.6%.
Speaking after the announcement of the results, Khan said:
“I will always be mayor for all Londoners, working to improve the lives of everyone in this city. The election results in the United Kingdom show that our country and even our city are still deeply divided. The scars of Brexit have not yet healed. A brutal cultural war further alienates us. ”
The election was supposed to take place in May last year but was postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sadiq Khan was born in 1970 in London to a large family of Pakistanis. In 2016, Khan became the first Muslim to take the post of mayor of the European capital, and before that – the first Muslim among members of the British Cabinet: in 2008-2010, he alternately held in the Labor government of Gordon Brown, Minister of State for Communities and Minister of State in the Ministry transport.
