Pros of youth
People who look much younger than their age often notice the advantages of this position. First of all, it is said that young people are generally treated more leniently. It is more pleasant for others to communicate with a person who has a young appearance. In some cases, you can get a student discount or marry a teenager (for example, by joining a group of tourists in another city). As for work, there are also advantages, as many colleagues are quite lenient if a young-looking employee does something wrong. Many say goodbye because people do not take a young person literally. And, of course, well-being is also counted among the pros. However, it is necessary to stop on it. Then there are the disadvantages.
Lack of perception on an equal footing
The girl Hannah admitted that at the age of thirty she was already a full-fledged qualified employee. However, she was always perceived as a student who still knows nothing and is gaining experience. Attempts to attract senior colleagues and become an equal member of the team were unsuccessful. At all presentations, other events, as well as almost every day, the girl was treated like a child. They smiled sweetly at her and were not taken seriously. It was simply impossible to build a career in such conditions.
Hannah recalls that at the age of 27, after graduating from journalism school and working as a deputy editor for six years, she faced this situation. The girl held an event, but a man over sixty years old asked her to bring drinks because he took her as a waitress. Another time she was asked what she was studying at the Institute, taking on a student.
Stacey, 28, who oversees the corporate finance marketing team, complained about the constant return to the question of her appearance. The girl admits that not a day goes by without one of the clients commenting on her young appearance. For example, she is asked in which university or even class she is studying. And every time the girl begins to return to their immediate responsibilities, the faces of customers appear pride and dissatisfied.
Some people are not able to respect those who are younger than them. And it’s not even in education (although this is the basis of such behavior) but in the mentality of some cultures. People are used to respecting age, so they do not perceive young people as an object of respect. Only an elderly man or woman has the right to vote, and it is up to young people to remain silent, learn and gain experience.
Stereotype
Another reason that young people cannot build a career is the stereotype of society. Not every employee is ready to obey someone who is younger. And even if the employee knows about the age of the boss, the youthful appearance of the other does not allow them to treat him with due respect. For example, forcing the same young workers to listen to themselves will be extremely problematic. People are accustomed to the fact that the boss can be an adult or even a mature person, in which you can recognize the boss, even by appearance.
Loss of self-confidence
Realizing that you look too young can lower your self-esteem. You will lose self-confidence and even behave differently. That is why everyone around you will perceive you not as you would like. In this case, the career will be unattainable for you.
Expert advice
Experts advise to constantly justify their position (regarding age) and confirm this with constant business actions. Feel free to enter the competition and do everything to win a professional victory. Do not pay attention to any remarks, be sure to keep your back and head straight, as if you were walking with books. Keep your posture, make a confident move and behave according to age. After thirty, the “symptoms of youth” will gradually disappear, so you should thoroughly prepare for this.
