The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba will meet today in Bratislava with the Minister for Foreign Economy and Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siyyarto. He announced this at a joint press conference with Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korchko on May 12.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – May 13, 2021 – Diplomatic Affairs
“Indeed, in preparation for a visit to Slovakia, to participate in the Central European Five, I initiated a meeting with Peter Siyarto. I never miss the opportunity to talk to my Hungarian colleague and still try to find a way to resolve the differences that exist between us, “Kuleba said on May 12.
According to him, Hungary is an unyielding and difficult partner, but it is necessary to talk and look for a solution.
“Basically, my experience in working with Hungary and working with Peter shows that we can achieve common results, we can untie one after another. I hope that tomorrow in Slovakia, in Bratislava, during our bilateral meeting, we will be able to untie at least one more knot, ”Kuleba said.
It should be added that Dmytro Kuleba is taking part in the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Central European Five for the first time: Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Within this format, five Central European countries discuss topical issues of European and regional policy.
Earlier, Kuleba said that Hungary is a difficult partner for Ukraine, but there is no alternative to achieving mutual understanding because our country needs it as a reliable friend and partner.
Kuleba said that Ukraine and Hungary had agreed on a number of controversial issues, including language and education legislation.
Relations between Ukraine and Hungary have been strained in recent years. Since September 2017, Hungary has been vetoing NATO decisions to deepen cooperation with Ukraine, as well as blocking dialogue at the political level. Yes, Hungary did not lift its veto at the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission.
This is a protest against the previously adopted Ukrainian law “On Education”, which provides, inter alia, for the wider introduction of the Ukrainian state language, including in educational institutions of national minorities.
Budapest believes it restricts the rights of about 150,000 Ukrainian Hungarians living in Transcarpathia.
Other incidents are connected with Zakarpattia. For example, in early December 2020, it became known about the performance of the Hungarian national anthem after the swearing-in of the newly elected deputies of the Syurtiv OTG of the Zakarpattia region. Because of this, there was an appeal to the SBU.
In addition, the SBU conducted searches of a charity fund in Transcarpathia due to possible interference in the political situation in Ukraine.
After the SBU searches, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siarto said that in Ukraine, “incomprehensible political swings continue regarding Hungarian parties and the Hungarian minority.”
Hungary has even asked the OSCE to send a monitoring mission to the region regarding the situation in Transcarpathia – and not for the first time.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called the allegation of “intimidation” of Hungarians in Transcarpathia speculation.
We will add, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during 2017 five, in 2018 seven meetings, in 2019 two and in 2020 two meetings of heads of foreign ministries of Ukraine and Hungary took place. Last year – in February in Kyiv and in May – in Budapest.
