Google has announced plans to convert quantum computers from a pure research state to an application. The search giant hopes that such technology will be able to solve a whole class of problems that are not available to exist computers. It is planned to launch such a machine by 2029.

To open a new computer, Google has opened a campus called Quantum AI in Santa Barbara. It houses a quantum data center, a hardware research laboratory, and a quantum chip factory. It is planned to spend several billion dollars on this initiative in the next decade.
Google has repeatedly stated its leadership in quantum computer technology. The last time this happened was last year when Google announced the achievement of quantum leadership. His quantum computer was able to complete in 200 seconds a task that a traditional supercomputer would solve for 10,000 years.
However, competitors in this area have questioned Google’s progress. For example, IBM said that a traditional supercomputer would solve the problem in 2.5 days or less, there is no talk of 10,000 years.
The peculiarity of quantum computers is that they can quickly find solutions to problems with many variables. This feature lies in their minimum unit of data – qubits.
This is analogous to a normal bit, but if the latter can only take values 0 and 1, the qubit can coexist in states 0 and 1. This state is known as superposition. The more qubits a quantum computer has, the more states of superposition can exist.
Despite claims of quantum leadership, Google admits that the practical use of quantum computers is still a long way off. Existing quantum computers have about 100 qubits, but Google wants to create a machine with 1,000,000 qubits.
However, before you can think of a powerful quantum computer with only 1000 qubits, you need to solve a number of engineering problems. For example, you need to create technologies to organize these qubits into one logical qubit. This will pave the way for the quantum transistor, the main building block of quantum computers.
Despite the technological challenges, Google is optimistic about the future. “We’re at a turning point,” said Hartmut Neven, who runs Google Quantum AI. – We now have important components that make us confident. We know how to do what is planned. ”
