The flow of lava reached the airport of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the east of the city of Goma after the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano. Authorities announced evacuation plans.

The government is discussing urgent action now. The plan to evacuate the residents of Goma has been activated, said government spokesman Patrick Muyaia. Thousands of Goma residents fled the city on foot to reach the border with Rwanda, as the city of nearly 2 million people was ablaze with orange flames.
The governor of North Kivu, Lieutenant General Ndima Kongba Konstant, said local civil defense forces had begun evacuating Goma residents after the volcano erupted.
Nyiragongo volcano, located near the border of DR Congo with Rwanda, began to erupt on Saturday, May 22. According to the Goma-based Volcano Monitoring Authority, the lava is moving to the border with Rwanda.
There are two active volcanoes in the city of Goma – Nemulagira and Nyiragongo. The last major eruption of Nyiragongo occurred in 2002 when about 250 people were killed and 120,000 others were left homeless.
