A life-threatening condition known as mucormycosis or “black fungus” is relatively rare, but doctors suspect that the sudden rise in infection could further complicate India’s fight against the pandemic. The media write that more than 250 people have already died from this disease.
On Saturday, Federal Minister Sadananda Gouda said that almost 9,000 cases had been reported in India to date, leading to a deficiency of amphotericin B, a drug used to treat the disease.
Mucormycosis has a high mortality rate and was already present in India before the pandemic. It is not contagious, but the frequency of its occurrence in the last month has shocked doctors.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, India has reported more than 26 million confirmed cases of coronavirus. Mucormycosis is caused by the influence of mucor mold, which is usually found in soil, air, and even in the human nose and mucus. It spreads through the airways and blurs facial structures. Sometimes doctors have to surgically remove the eye to stop the infection from entering the brain.
In the Indian capital, Delhi, quarantine was extended until May 31 amid declining coronavirus infections.
