A joint statement by the African Union, issued with the West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS, and other members of the international community, demanded the immediate release of President Bach N’Dow and Prime Minister Mocter Uane, who were taken to Katie’s military headquarters.
The arrests came about an hour after the announcement of a new government cabinet. In particular, it did not include Interior Minister Modibo Kone or Defense Minister Sadio Camara, both supporters of the junta.
No reasons were given for their exclusion, but the move involved strengthening divisions in the caretaker government.
The two leaders were sworn in last September after the ruling military junta agreed to hand over power to a civilian interim government under growing international pressure.
The junta seized power a month after soldiers surrounded President Ibrahim Bubakar Kate’s house and fired into the air. He later resigned from national television under pressure, saying he did not want bloodshed so he could remain in office.
The soldiers then went on state television a few hours later, calling themselves the National Committee for the Salvation of the People and promising a speedy return to civilian rule. However, Monday’s events seemed to call that promise into question.
