Estonia could combine the functions of the president and prime minister in one position. This opinion was expressed on Thursday by the honorary chairman of the ruling right-liberal Reform Party Seim Kallas.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – May 27, 2021 – International News
“It’s a small country, one black car less,” he wrote in an article in the newspaper Eesti Päevaleht. – And then, of course, the prime minister could be elected directly. Simple and clear. ”
Kallas noted that the procedure for electing the President of Estonia is currently very complicated. To select a candidate, you need the support of 68 deputies of the 101-seat Riigikogu (parliament) or 105 votes in the Board of Electors.
The next presidential election in Estonia is scheduled for August 10 to September 29. First, the head of state will try to elect the country’s parliament. If he fails, a Board of Electors will be convened, consisting of 208 people (107 local government representatives and 101 members of the Riigikogu).
Currently, the President of Estonia is Kersti Kaljulaid, who was elected to this position in 2016.
