The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will hold an unscheduled meeting today, May 27, due to the situation with the board of the Irish airline Ryanair, which made an emergency landing in Minsk on May 23. This is stated in a statement by ICAO, which was spread on Twitter.

“The President of the ICAO Council convened an urgent meeting of 36 diplomatic representatives in the ICAO Council on May 27 over the incident related to the flight Ryanair FR4978 in the airspace of Belarus on May 23, 2021,” the statement said.
On Sunday, May 23, at 3 p.m., a Ryanair Athens-Vilnius plane made an emergency landing at Minsk airport after receiving a report of a mine. Roman Protasevych, a co-founder of the NEXTA Telegram channel, was on board the plane and was detained.
The command to take the plane in Minsk was given personally by Alexander Lukashenko, the Telegram channel “Pool One” reported.
The head of the communications department of the Lithuanian International Airport, where the plane was supposed to land first, said that there was a conflict between a crew member and a passenger, which is why it was decided to land the plane in Minsk. However, according to one of the passengers of the flight, there was no conflict. After boarding, all passengers were taken off the plane, Protasevich was taken aside, and his belongings were taken to the runway.
The EU summit decided to expand economic sanctions against Belarus and add new individuals and organizations to the list of sanctions.
