Hackers of Nobelium, who are credited with Russian origins and a cyber attack on SolarWinds, have now targeted about 150 government agencies, think tanks, consultants, and NGOs. This was announced on Thursday by Microsoft Corp.

“This week, we discovered Nobelium cyberattacks targeting government agencies, think tanks, consultants, and NGOs. The wave of attacks targeted about 3,000 email accounts in more than 150 different organizations. While organizations in the United States have been the most attacked, the targets cover at least 24 countries, ”Microsoft said in a statement.
It is reported that at least a quarter of the organizations were involved in activities related to international development, humanitarian issues, and human rights activities.
So, this week, Nobelium launched attacks by hacking into an e-mail account used by the United States Agency for International Development, and from there launched phishing attacks on many other organizations, Microsoft said.
The SolarWinds hack, discovered in December, gave access to thousands of companies and government agencies that used its software products. Microsoft President Brad Smith described the attack as “the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen.”
US intelligence believes that Russia is behind the cyber attack through software (software) from SolarWinds: in March 2020, hackers managed to introduce a virus into the Orion update, downloaded and then used by thousands of customers. Among them were US government agencies and more than 400 of the largest American companies.
Russian officials at the highest level reject Washington’s version of Moscow’s involvement in such actions. Russian President Dmitry Peskov’s spokesman said Moscow was not involved in hacking attacks on US government agencies and companies.
However, in April, US President Joe Biden signed a decree imposing new sanctions for “harmful foreign activities” by the Russian government.
