The data are the result of an internal investigation conducted in 2015 by the Danish Military Intelligence Service into the role of the NSA. According to the investigation, in 2012 and 2014, the NSA used Danish information cables to spy on high-ranking officials in Sweden, Norway, France, and Germany, including former German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and former German opposition leader Per Steinbrück.
Denmark, a close ally of the United States, has several key submarine Internet landing stations going to Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
An internal investigation by Danish intelligence was launched in 2014 after fears about Edward Snowden’s leaks in the previous year, revealing the work of the NSA.
In 2013, Edward Snowden also stated that Switzerland was on the list of countries with which the US National Security Agency has “focused cooperation”.
