According to firefighters, it happened on June 2 due to a fire in the emergency gas pipe, according to Fars. Authorities in the capital have urged Tehran residents to leave the surrounding areas.
A spokesman for the plant, Shaker Hafayi, said the fire affected only one tank. “I refute the information that the fire spread to 18 other refinery tanks,” SANA quoted him as saying.
According to a company representative, “the incident occurred due to a leak in one of the tanks of the refinery with a capacity of 20 thousand barrels.” “Fortunately, the fire did not spread to any of the other tanks and other parts of the plant,” he added.
In addition, Hafayi categorically rejected sabotage as a possible cause of the fire. “The version of sabotage is excluded. The fire occurred for technical reasons,” he said.
The fire is planned to be completely extinguished within 12 hours. “We have no choice but to wait for the combustible material in the tank to burn out completely,” said Hamid Armanfar, executive director of the refinery, quoted by SANA. He added that “efforts are now being made to resume production at the refinery.”
The Prosecutor in the Tehran-based city of Ray Galamreza Noforsati said the judiciary was investigating the incident. “Necessary court rulings have been issued regarding the incident. A lawsuit will be filed as a result of the incident,” he said.
The Tehran refinery is one of the country’s largest refineries, providing about 15% of Iran’s refining capacity. The plant produces gasoline, diesel fuel, gas oil, fuel oil, and other petroleum products. The refinery is located in the southern part of Tehran province.
