“Today, the Competition Authority is imposing sanctions on Google of up to € 220 million for abusing its dominant position in the advertising server market for website and mobile publishers,” the statement said.
The French antitrust regulator said that Google has given preferential treatment to its technologies offered under the Google Ad Manager brand, both for the DFP ad server (which allows publishers of sites and applications to sell their advertising space) and for its platform for selling SSP AdX organizes auction processes that allow publishers to sell their offers to advertisers) “to the detriment of their competitors and publishers.”
“The decision to impose sanctions on Google is of particular importance because it is the world’s first solution to study the complex algorithmic processes of auctions through which” advertising media “works on the Internet. A particularly quick investigation revealed the processes by which Google, relying on its strong dominance on ad servers for sites and applications outperformed its competitors on both ad servers and SSP platforms. These very serious actions led to a deterioration in competition in the emerging online advertising market and allowed Google not only to maintain but and strengthen its dominance. This sanction and these commitments will restore a level playing field for all players and enable publishers to make the most of their advertising space. “- commented the head of the regulator Isabel de Silva.
In December 2019, the French antitrust authority fined Google 150 million euros for “using a dominant position in the market.”
Internet giant Google was fined 965 million euros in France the same year over tax claims.
