The automaker announced the release of a new version of the Model S worth $ 130,000 in January.
“The fastest production car ever created”, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 2 seconds.
Tesla is selling a less powerful version of the upgraded Model S with an increased range – 412 miles (663 km) – at a price of just under $ 80,000. Deliveries will begin later this year.
The new Model S is the sedan’s first major overhaul since its launch in 2012, bringing Tesla back to its current status as the world’s leading electric vehicle maker. The exterior design has not changed much (although it has an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.208), and the interior has undergone significant changes.
The Model S now has a horizontal touch screen, as in the Model 3 and Model Y, but with a larger 17-inch version with smaller front panels. Unlike Model 3 and Model Y, the steering wheel has a digital dashboard. The third panel – behind the center console for rear passengers.
There are other improvements, such as more space for rear passengers, as well as chargers for cordless phones in the back seats.
The S Plaid is equipped with a new three-engine transmission, which Tesla first began to develop for the future second-generation roadster. The company tested the Plaid transmission in a Model S sedan on the famous racetracks. These three engines together increase power to 1,000 horsepower, and the car can reach a top speed of 200 miles (approximately 322 km) per hour.
“We have to show that the electric car is the best car,” Musk said at the event on Thursday night. “It should be clear (that) cars that run on clean energy can be the fastest cars, the safest cars (and) can be the coolest cars in all respects,” he added.
“This car is crashing,” Musk said.
On June 6, Musk announced that Tesla had canceled the release of the most expensive version of the new Model S, called Plaid Plus. This version, which started at about $ 150,000, can travel 520 miles (approximately 837 km) on a full battery. The car is powered by new lithium-ion batteries developed by Tesla.
An upgraded Model X was also announced in January, but deliveries of this new SUV were delayed for several months, and Musk did not mention the updated SUV on Thursday night.
