According to the publication, 56-year-old Michael Packard on Friday morning caught lobsters off the Atlantic near the town of Provincetown.
“Absolutely suddenly I felt a huge force of the shock, and then it became dark around. I felt that I was moving, and the whale was pushing me with the muscles in his mouth,” he said.
At first, Packard thought that he was eaten by a shark, but not finding the teeth of the attacker and realizing that he did not receive any serious injuries, the diver realized that he was inside the whale. The scuba diver began to move intensely, after which the whale emerged to the surface, shook his head, and released him.
Packard’s partner dragged him to the boat and took him ashore. As a result of the incident, Michael Packard was hospitalized with extensive soft tissue damage, but doctors found no fractures. After recovery, the diver intends to catch lobster again.
According to Juke Robbins, director of humpback whale research at the Center for Coastal Research in Provincetown, these animals do not show aggression towards humans, and the incident could be a coincidence. According to the scientist, when eating the open mouth of a humpback whale may limit its view, but the esophagus of toothless whales is too small to swallow a person.
