Among the mass of garden plants, only a few species are grown on each site. Among them is cabbage, as it is the basis of most first and second courses, as well as salads. Not everyone can grow large strong and crunchy cobs. Many gardeners make a lot of mistakes in the process, which negatively affects yields.

What mistakes lead to a decrease in cabbage yield
1. The location of the beds in the shade. The more sun, the better for vegetables. Only in the first days after planting seedlings, it is desirable to cover the beds from the scorching sun with a translucent material. When the bushes are taken and strengthened, the shelter can be removed. When choosing a place, keep in mind that the trees growing nearby will soon be covered with leaves, which can provide shade.
2. No leavening agent on heavy soil. The roots of cabbage are tender, easily damaged. The plant grows poorly on dense soil, which is virtually airless. To make the cobs grow large, peat, hydrogel, compost, sand, or vermiculite are added to each hole during planting. Otherwise, the soil sticks together, the root system suffers, the yield of cabbage decreases.
3. A small distance between the bushes when planting seedlings in the open ground leads to thickening. We must not forget that the diameter of the cobs is rarely less than 30 cm, which means that there should be a gap of about 50-60 cm between plants. If this is not taken into account, the planted seedlings will have to be thinned in the future, and this threatens the partial loss of the cabbage crop.
4. Too late fertilization. Fertilize the plantings until the cobs begin to tie. Initially, the plant intensively grows green mass, but at this time it is necessary to shed the ground under the roots of “green manure”, prepared from dandelion leaves, nettles, and other weeds. You can also use ash and mullein infusion diluted with water.
5. Rare soil moisture. Cabbage yields will be severely affected if you forget about watering. The vegetable crop is incredibly moisture-loving, but at the same time does not tolerate waterlogging of the soil. The soil should always be kept slightly moist, without flooding the planting.
6. The absence of a shower in the heat leads to the drying of leaves, cobs. In addition, cabbage does not like too high temperatures – more than +25 degrees, and the best way to slightly cool the plantings – water with sprinkler water. It is worth doing this every day during the hot period.
Care should also be taken to ensure that cabbage plantings do not suffer from pest infestations, as insects can destroy the crop in a matter of days.
