“The first case of mucormycosis, known as ‘black fungus’, was reported in a patient from Formosa who had previously suffered from COVID-19,” the report said.
The patient was a 47-year-old woman with high blood pressure, type II diabetes, and COVID-19. Thus, after discharge after the coronavirus, the woman developed a headache and impaired sensitivity of the palate. After the inspection, dangerous fungi were found.
The ministry added that another probable case of mucormycosis was also being investigated. This is a dead man from the province of Buenos Aires.
The first outbreak of mucormycosis in patients with COVID-19 was recorded in May in India. Impressive immune therapy for coronavirus infection has led to an outbreak of a rare disease in the country with a mortality rate of about 50%. “Diabetes lowers the body’s immune defenses, strengthens the coronavirus, and then steroids that help fight COVID-19 act as a fuel for the fire,” said Dr. Akshay Nair of Mumbai.
Mucormycosis is a rare infection caused by fungi of the Mucorales family, which are commonly found in soil, plants, manure, rotting fruits, and vegetables. The fungus affects the sinuses, brain, and lungs and poses a threat to people with weakened immune systems.
