Warm weather has led to the growth of blue-green algae in the Baltic Sea.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – June 21, 2021 – International News
If blue-green algae are usually talked about mainly in July and August, this year their mass distribution came earlier due to warm weather. The Estonian Meteorological Service reports that the latest satellite data show a large number of blue-green algae in the Baltic Sea, which can also be found near the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.
“Blue-green algae form an oily layer on the surface of the water. When this place becomes thick and dense, blue-green algae die and form stinking mud. Some blue-green algae produce toxins that are dangerous to humans and animals, ”the meteorological service said, adding that it is better not to swim in water with blue-green algae.
As the seawater temperature continues to rise due to the hot weather in the near future, this will contribute to the formation of blue-green algae.
“Fortunately, large colonies of blue-green algae are located far away from us in the open sea. However, with a sharp change in wind direction, blue-green algae can begin to migrate towards our waters. It’s a matter of time. There are still big problems ahead, ”said the Estonian Meteorological Service.
Algae mucus has covered the sea coast in Turkey and threatens the ecology of the Black Sea.
