How to grow beets?
Loose and nutritious soil is best for beets. And still, it is necessary to consider that this root very much loves heat therefore it is necessary to land it already in well warmed up soil. If the beets are formed in the cold and at temperatures below 12 ° C, they will eventually become woody and unsuitable for consumption.
For planting beets you need to choose open areas. The fact is that the roots need heat, as well as bright and saturated sunlight. It will be much more difficult to grow tasty beets in the shade, even if all other necessary conditions are met.
It should be noted that the soil should be moderately acidic. You can check the acidity, for example, with litmus paper, which is easy to buy in any garden store. If the soil needs to be deacidified, this can be done with ash, chalk, lime, or dolomite flour. In acidic soils, beets will grow poorly.
An important point is considered to be sufficient moisture. And here you need to find a balance. After all, due to poor watering, the beet pulp becomes coarse, which has a bad effect on its taste. And a large amount of water will make the root vulnerable to pests, and such beets will be stored less.
Those gardeners who plant beets in the same place every year also make a mistake. And then these people are surprised that they got a vague product both in appearance and taste.
The fact is that it is better to plant beets where a year ago grew beans, peas, watermelons, pumpkins, potatoes, or tomatoes. And if cabbage, carrots, or spinach were grown in some areas, it is better not to plant beets here for the next five years.
How to grow sweet beets?
When in mid-summer the root begins to grow actively, you can make an infusion of nettle. By the way, this home fertilizer is perfect for almost any garden crop except legumes, onions, or garlic (it suppresses these plants).
Make fertilizer is easy. Simply chop the branches and leaves of young nettles, pour them into a plastic or wooden container (it is better not to take metal) and pour warm water. Stir daily, and in two weeks the excellent fertilizer for the garden will be ready.
After the nettle fertilizer in 2-4 weeks, gardeners make another fertilizer. It requires only 2 cups of wood ash, a tablespoon of sea or rock salt, and 10 liters of water. This mixture is simply watered beets under the root.
We hope that these simple tips will help you gather an excellent harvest of large and sweet beets. And from such a root is not a problem to cook a lot of delicious dishes. Of course, you can believe that beets are very unpretentious, that it is quite simple to plant and dig … but is it worth seriously hoping for a great harvest?
