As part of an EU-funded project called AQTION, scientists from the University of Innsbruck in Austria have unveiled a compact quantum computer capable of performing a wide range of data processing tasks. We are not yet talking about a portable version, however, if an ordinary quantum computing station requires several rooms for placement, then the prototype of Austrian scientists can fit into the box of a conventional data center.

The cost of the AQTION project is estimated at 10 million euros. Its goal is to create small, powerful computing modules, like the computer presented by scientists at the University of Innsbruck, which could be installed in standard premises and eventually replace most of the server computers in use today.
Tests have shown that the performance of the new system and the error rate is at the laboratory level. The developers said that the hardware and software capabilities of the prototype still need to be finalized before the device becomes available for commercial use. It is assumed that the business will be able to rent the computing power of the computer through a dedicated cloud interface.
