Now tourists will be able to walk through the underground corridors on a specially built wooden platform, and then take a special elevator to the arena.
Previously, the hypogeum was lit by candles, but now, after 2000 thousand years of gradual destruction of the ground level around, sunlight penetrates there.
The restoration of the entire Colosseum lasted 10 years, in 2018 the restoration of the hypogeum began. Archaeologists, restorers, engineers, and architects have worked to restore the monument to its former appearance. During the restoration, dirt, algae, lichens, and microorganisms that had accumulated over the centuries had to be washed away. In some cases, traces of previous restorations, which had already been damaged, had to be removed. They were replaced by “more authentic materials.”
Restorers have also installed a system to reduce the ingress of water into the masonry, which is one of the main causes of rot, reports Radio Liberty.
