An international team of scientists has found that tree growth lasts only a few hours a day. Mostly it happens at night. Scientists monitored 170 trees that grew in 50 different places in Switzerland.

Researchers were surprised that the trees grew even in moderately dry soil. However, one condition had to be met: the air had to be sufficiently humid. Dry air slowed growth and affected it worse than dry soil. The growth of trees depends on their ability to retain moisture.
As soon as the air becomes drier, the trees lose more water than they absorb due to transpiration (movement of water inside themselves). The ability to retain moisture decreases, growth stops.
In plants, the radius of the trunks was measured during the experiment, and information on air and soil moisture was collected. Scientists thus obtained a huge array of data from 60 million measurements.
