According to preliminary results of the investigation, 182 burials were found. A statement from Canada’s indigenous peoples said the graves were shallow – about a meter – and were located in a cemetery.
Work has begun to determine whether the graves belong to children who have been forced to attend school.
The school operated from 1912 to 1970.
This is the third such educational institution to operate in Canada under the auspices of the Catholic Church, where unnamed graves have recently been discovered, including 215 in Kamloops and 751 in Saskatchewan.
In Canada, there was a network of boarding schools set up to assimilate indigenous children by removing them from homes and communities and banning them from speaking their mother tongue or engaging in cultural practices. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as forced labor, were reportedly practiced in these facilities.
At least 150,000 children attended such schools as part of what the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission called 2015 a “cultural genocide” against Canada’s indigenous people.
