Even heavy rains do not stop the total drought in the southern regions. Climate change is turning them into hot and sun-scorched places that are constantly expanding. Two-thirds of Ukraine is now in the zone of risky agriculture.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – July 7, 2021 – Agriculture
There was no rain in some regions for up to four months last year. In the Odesa region alone, billions have been lost in the last two years from lost crops.
Farmers are still closing loans and trying to stabilize the situation. The only salvation is the restoration of irrigation systems cut into scrap and destroyed after the collapse of the union.
Odesa region has become one of the three regions of the country where the program of restoration of irrigation systems and reclamation will work. Currently, only 11% of the land is irrigated here, and this area is planned to be increased by almost half.
In particular, four pumping stations and the main canal will be reconstructed. The preliminary cost of works – UAH 200 million. Currently, farmers use two types of irrigation:
– sprinkling – for large areas of grain, the cost of installation per hectare is about $ 2-3 thousand;
– drip system – several times cheaper and more versatile, suitable for crops, as well as gardens, vegetables, and berries.
Thanks to the resumption of watering next year in the Odessa region is expected to collect a quarter more harvest.
