According to him, his father died in his sleep after several years of battling Parkinson’s disease.
“He was a true free-thinking filmmaker, and to the very end he remained an amazing optimist … According to my stepmother’s estimates, they lived in a happy marriage for a little over two thousand years,” Downey Jr. wrote.
As the cinematographer’s wife, writer Rosemary Rogers, told the Daily News, Downey Sr. died in his sleep at his home in New York.
Robert Downey Sr.:
The popularity of Downey Sr. came after the satirical comedy “Putney Swope” (Putney Swope), released in 1969. The picture ridiculed New York’s advertising industry.
In 1970, he made the film “Pound”, in which his son played his first role in a movie.
After that, he made the films “Hugo Company” in 1977, “Lips for Hire”, “In the Ass Academy”, “Too Much Sun”, and “America”.
As an actor, Robert Downey Sr. starred in “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” “Living and Dying in Los Angeles,” “How to Steal a Skyscraper,” “Ave, Caesar,” “Johnny, Be Good.” The last film in which he acted as an actor was the comedy action movie “Robbery of the Tower”, shot in 2011.
After the success of Putney Swope, the career of Robert Downey Sr. declined sharply. Ten years, until 1981, by his own admission, the director spent on cocaine.
Downey Sr. was married three times. His first wife was actress Elsie Anne Downey, she bore him two children, including Robert Downey Jr., known, among other things, for his role as Tony Stark in the Marvel movies. They divorced in 1975, after which he married actress Lori Ernst. She died in 1994 from Lou Gehrig’s disease, and in 1998 the director last married the writer Rosemary Rogers.
