According to Christie’s, the auction house that organized the sale, this item is about 50 square meters. centimeters is one of the eight drawings of Leonardo left in private hands.
The sketch was made on pale pink-beige paper using a silver needle, a technique Leonardo taught his teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio, which involved marking chemically treated paper with silver sticks or wire.
Over the centuries, the item has passed from hand to hand several times – in fact, it was once sold to Christie’s for 2.50 pounds (about 312 pounds, or $ 430 in today’s money) in 1860. The painting, entitled “Bear’s Head,” has since been exhibited in major institutions, including the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, and the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Christie’s Head of Drawing Old Masters Stein Alstins called the work “small but wonderful.”
In 2019, it was reported that museum workers could not find a painting by da Vinci for $ 450 million.
