Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday rescinded a 2015 decree banning the country’s airlines from flying to Egyptian resorts.
The Egyptian Federation of Tourist Chambers said that the decision to lift the ban had a positive effect and that the number of flights might reach 300 flights per week.
Hossam Hazaa, head of the federation, said that 3.1 million Russians visited Egypt during 2014, and they represented 33 percent of the total number of tourists who visited the country that year.
He said that Egypt expects to receive about one million Russian tourists by the end of this year and that the precautionary measures led to an increase in the number of visitors from Eastern Europe to the Red Sea and South Sinai.
He added that security measures at airports, health protocols in hotels, and vaccinated sector workers, created a positive image for visitors from Western European countries.
He said that hotels and tourist villages in Egypt know the needs of Russian tourists and will work to meet them.
Mohamed Haidar, Egypt’s ambassador to Albania, announced the return of tourism between the two countries.
He said that there are already two chartered flights per week from Tirana to Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada. The flights also covered travelers from Kosovo after the expansion of major Albanian companies in this market.
He said that the promising numbers reflect the great interest of tourists in Egypt as one of the most important destinations for 2021, based on the state’s precautionary measures to ensure the safety of visitors.
He said that another important step taken last week was the launch of a regular seasonal flight between the two capitals for the first time to support joint tourism.
He said that occupancy rates indicate a positive development in tourism and transport, which can be built upon to achieve a good basis for the sustainability of trips in the future.
He added that this would have a positive impact on the tourism sector and support all aspects of bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Albania, especially in the fields of trade and investment.
Haidar said that these developments come within the framework of the intensive efforts made by the embassy over the past few months to inform major Albanian tourism companies and agencies about the facilities offered by Egypt, as well as the successful visit of the Egyptian Deputy Minister of Tourism to Tirana.
