The ministry’s initiative was launched in late April, as part of the “Culture in Quarantine” project, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of reading during the closure imposed to limit the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The initial target for the marathon was 100,000 pages before it was later raised due to the great interaction, reaching 606,000 pages after only a month and a half making the event the largest reading initiative in the Middle East.
The online platform has recorded 2,396 citations taken from 1,839 books, ranging in philosophy, history, science, economics, and more. Prizes were distributed to the readers who contributed the most.
The Saudi Literature, Publishing and Translation Authority recently awarded two sets of short stories written by Saudi authors to people in quarantine centers. The initiative aims to promote Saudi culture, arts, and talents.
